Spending time with Jesus is how you get to know him and build a relationship with Him. Whether you are a baby Christian or a seasoned one, you probably understand the depth of things you can learn about God when you intentionally set aside time to spend with Him. You get to learn His personality, experience His peace, and enjoy His love.
However, as someone who has been a Christian for a while but is still trying to “figure it out,” I understand that sometimes you want to change up your quiet time. Whether you want to change it because you feel God pulling you to something else, or because you have a hard time focusing in that space because you have been doing it for so long, I understand wanting the shift.
Therefore, I comprised a list of 4 new ways that you can spend time with God TODAY! Remember, that it doesn’t have to be perfect, it doesn’t even have to be planned, it just has to be intentional. God meets you where you are all the time and he is not constricted by place or time, He is with you all the time, in all that you do.
Nature Walk
Are you an outdoorsy person? Do you find peace in nature? When you go outside, are you in awe of the beauty around you? Then you may want to consider taking a walk with Jesus! Literally. I think there is something really beautiful about spending intentional time with God while walking in the beauty of the world he created for us. It’s fall ya’ll! So this is perfect time to connect with God while looking at the changing leaves. And you can even turn that into a conversation with God – are there changes in your life that you are confused bout and need clarity on? Just allow for the nature around you to guide your time with God.
Music and Dancing
Now, music is something a lot of people use in their intentional time with God. Even I use music in my prayer time, especially in my car. However, have you ever considered dancing? As a dance instructor, I understand the power that courses through my body when I move out the words of a song that really speaks to me. When I dance, I tell God that I am using this body that He gave me to honor him. And so many emotions can be expressed through dance – anger, sadness, joy. Dance can give you the chance to say what you can’t with words and it gives you a chance to connect with your body and spirit. And you don’t have to be good at it! Remember, God honors intention!
Exercising
Although you may not think that the “Jesus help me!” that you say while exercising is a prayer, I’m here to tell you, IT IS! I remember one time I was in a spin class about to quit when I said “Jesus, give me strength” and He did! Now, it didn’t make the class easier or my thighs hurt any less, but it shifted my mindset from the pain I was feeling in the moment to the strength I could pull from God. I was able to remember why I was working out and how important it was to protect the body God gave me. You can read scripture while walking on the treadmill or listen to it while running. You can listen to gospel/Christian music while exercising or listen to a sermon on Youtube. You can do anything that will bring you closer to God. Now go burn some calories with Jesus!
Cleaning
Now, this is something I have discovered during the quarantine. Because I am working from home, I wake up early to clean the kitchen before I start work. This past summer, I just started praying while washing dishes. And since then, it’s become a habit. Early in the morning during the week is one of the times I truly have time alone. Therefore, I use this time to be intentional with God. and let me tell you, I have really enjoyed it! You don’t have to be super deep either, you can just tell God what you have planned for the day or about something that you are struggling with. God appreciates you using the quiet moments you have to spend time with Him.
When you try any of the ideas I offered to you, make sure that you are gracing yourself. You may not feel all the butterflies you normally feel in your “normal” space. However, always remember that God honors intention. If you were feeling bored with what you were doing previously, guess what? God already knows that. And He is going to be so happy that instead of staying in that space, you are shifting to a new one to experience Him in a new way. God will meet you there, I promise He will.

I really love this. I needed this reminder to get creative with my quiet time. It may not be perfect but I know I’ll feel better the more I talk to God!
